A good starting point
for your print file.
Always follow the template or specification supplied for your product. These guidelines cover the common checks before you send artwork.
Size, bleed and safe areas
Set the document to the finished trim size. For most small-format print, allow 3 mm bleed beyond each edge unless the product specification says otherwise. Extend backgrounds and images into that bleed.
Keep important text and logos at least 3 mm inside the trim, or further where the template requires it. Folds, binding and display hardware may need more space.
Images
Aim for 300 ppi at the final printed size for small-format work. Large-format requirements depend on the viewing distance and production method. Enlarging a small image does not add detail.
Colour
Use the colour setup required for the job. Many standard print jobs use CMYK; spot colours should only remain where they are intended. If you do not have a printer-supplied profile or specification, ask before converting.
Screens emit light and paper reflects it, so colour will not match a screen exactly. Tell us about colour-critical work before ordering.
Fonts and PDFs
Embed fonts when exporting a PDF. Use the printer’s requested PDF standard and check the exported file, not just the source document. Only include crop marks when requested.
Booklets and folded work
Supply booklet pages as single pages in reading order unless a different setup has been requested. Saddle-stitched booklets normally need a page count divisible by four, including the cover. Use the correct panel sizes for folded leaflets.
Cutters, white ink and special finishes
Follow the supplied template for cutter paths, white ink, foil, varnish or other special layers. Naming, overprint settings and layer structure must match the production specification.
Before you send
- Open the exported PDF and check every page
- Check spelling, prices, dates, phone numbers and web addresses
- Confirm the finished size and page count
- Make sure images and fonts appear correctly
- Remove template guidance that must not print
If you are unsure about a setting, leave the file as it is and ask. We would rather check the source than undo a conversion.
